Chemicals you do not want on your skin

Chemicals you do not want on your skin

This is a 'short-list' of some of the more hazardous and toxic chemicals you will often find in your skin and personal care products. Take a very close look at the labels of your skin and personal care products, including your hair shampoo and conditioner and see if any of these potentially toxic chemicals described here are listed on the label.

If they are there, you should seriously consider finding an alternative that does not contain any of these chemicals and toss the old products out. Health food stores will offer alternatives as well as online sources.

While the majority of people will not give up hair color, hair spray, or perfume, I do recommend cutting down on as many chemicals as possible. Detox your body to stop your body from storing the chemicals. These chemicals only cause a problem when they have not been detoxed out of the body and are built up in your organs and tissues.

Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and/or Ethyl Paraben. Used as preservatives to extend the shelf life of skin and personal care products. Parabens have been reported to have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrogenic and can be absorbed by the body through the skin. Widely used even though they are potentially toxic. (See Scientific Literature).

Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) DEA and TEA are often used in cosmetics and shampoos as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness of hair and skin. DEA and TEA are "amines" (ammonia compounds) and can form cancer-causing nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. They are toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time. (See Scientific Literature).

Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl UreaThese are widely used preservatives. The American Academy of Dermatology has found them to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis. Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals contains a good antifungal agent, and they must be combined with other preservatives. Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic. (See Scientific Literature).

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate. A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos, bubble baths, hand and body wash products for its cleansing and foam-building properties. Often derived from petroleum, it is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the phrase "comes from coconuts." It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions. Avoid at all cost. (See Scientific Literature).

Methylisothiazoline (MIT)Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is a biocide widely used in industrial and cosmetic products and has been shown to pose a potential risk to unborn babies. It is widely used in shampoos and there very well could be neuro-developmental consequences from Mit. It is of particularly concerned to women with occupational exposure to MIT during pregnancy as there is a possibility of risk to the foetus. Avoid at all cost. (See Scientific Literature).

PetrolatumAlso known as petroleum jelly, this mineral oil derivative is used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap. Most Petro-chemicals are carcinogens and are to be avoided. (See Scientific Literature).

Propylene Glycol. Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. It has been known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema. When you see PEG (polyethylene glycol) or PPG (polypropylene glycol) on labels, beware—these are related synthetics. The natural versions are fine and perfectly safe, not so their synthetic counter parts.
PVP/VA CopolymerA petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, styling aids and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since inhaled particles can damage the lungs of sensitive persons. Most Petro-chemicals are carcinogens.
Stearalkonium Chloride. A plant-derived ingredient, it reduces static electricity by neutralizing electrical charges on hair, and is a good conditioning agent. It is a quaternary ammonium compound also used in hair conditioners and creams. Developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, it is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which are beneficial to the hair. Causes allergic reactions. Potentially toxic.

Synthetic Colors used to make cosmetics "pretty," synthetic colors, along with synthetic hair dyes, should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 3 / D&C Green No. 6. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.
(See Scientific Literature).

Synthetic Fragrances. The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read "fragrance." Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation—the list goes on. Synthetic fragrances should be avoided. Be careful when looking at these because often the label may say "fragrance of Lavender", or fragrance of "Rose" or similarly popular essential oils. Fragrance of = Synthetic, NOT the real essential oil.

There are thousands more chemicals and it is not the intention of this article to bore you, but rather to alert you to some of the most commonly used chemicals which are found in most brands on your department store and supermarket shelves.

Natural Skin Care: I Think NOT!

Natural Skin Care: I Think NOT!

Natural Skin Care products change rapidly from the live plant to the laboratory. Don't be fooled into thinking natural is necessarily better for you because the term "natural" seems to be interchangeable in the skin care and health field. Many products touted as natural contain a list of chemicals a mile long to "stabilize" and "preserve" them. The other issue is that when you take a whole plant, it is a synergistic being. All components of that plant go into making its therapeutic properties. Isolating beneficial chemicals and compounds and then refining them changes their energetic structure. If science could create a heart that lived outside the body, would it have the same impact as the heart living inside the body? No. The function could be the same but all the chemicals in the body that interact with the heart would be missing. Robots preform the functions of man, but still are not human because they lack the synergistic properties of the human body.
Many times, the extraction process for plants and herbs is harsh and unnatural, which destroys the natural compounds and balance.
Natural skin care products are no longer clearly defined and are undergoing critical review in terms of their 'natural' components. Many companies are promoting their products as natural, however adding isolated substances, although extracted from natural sources, is not what is meant by natural skin care or natural personal care products.

What Characterizes Beauty?

What Characterizes Beauty?

According to Thomas Rabe, a research fellow at Procter & Gamble, surprisingly similar standards of beauty have endured throughout the ages, regardless of ethnicity or geographical area. These standards include:

• Full lips
• Naturally glowing pink lips and cheeks
• Large eyes
• Prominent, long, curled, dark eyelashes
• Smooth skin with subtle tonal variation
• Taught, soft skin structure
• Prominent cheekbones
• Saturated life-like color

I often hear that skin care is a luxury. Skin care should be a necessity not a luxury. Our appearance is how we view ourselves. It is also how the world views us. Right or wrong, instantaneous impressions often speak louder than words and influence our thoughts, actions and reactions to people. If your skin is aging, so is your internal body. I just had a client say to me that we are degrading and dying from the moment we are born. I do not agree with that. I know women in men that are in their later years that are more vibrant, active, quick, and full-of-life than many 30 year olds. Ask them if they feel they started to die when they were born and they will probably laugh at you. I see life, health and vitality in another way. I see a life that is full and happy; it just depends on how YOU want to view life.
While there are some things in the list above that would take a plastic surgeon to change, skin care therapists can change, maximize and minimize the list according to the standards of beauty. As we age, our lymphatic system tends to slow down due to toxic build-up. This build-up causes a back flow of retained fluid that causes facial swelling. Facial swelling makes eyes appear smaller, cheekbones disappear, and gives a soft flabby appearance.
As we age, our lips tends to shrink and collagen is lost. Through an unhealthy lifestyle, people find their skin becomes thicker, less supple and youthful. Healthy color changes and that glow is lost. Hair thins and eyelashes and eyebrows do the same. Many people attribute this to the aging process, not to years worth of an unhealthy lifestyle. An unhealthy lifestyle breaks down vitality and beauty, not age. Age is ONLY a build-up of unhealthy habits.
Aestheticians and skin care therapists can drain lymphatic build-up, rebuild collagen to maintain or find that youthful plumpness, enhance the growth of eyelashes and eyebrows, and retexturize the skin. Wellness aestheticians can start to repair the damage internally and externally allowing the skin to glow and rebuild permanently once again.

Read more about this here

Health is much more than eating the right foods or exercising. To maintain a healthy body, you need a healthy body to start with.
And that's what we're here for!

Are you sick of being tired and tired of being sick? Are you currently or have worked with therapies that did not produce the results or change your life like you expected?

The problem is that we are all bio-chemcially, bio-energetically and bio-magnetically different. There cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach to health care. If your health care professional is not addressing all aspects of your being then you are not getting what you need or should be getting; quality of life.

Our body is multi-layered. When you peel back one layer, you have another layer to address. This is how health issues remain in our tissues; via layers. The wellness process does not happen over night because it took a lifetime of layering to produce your current state of mental, emotional and physical health.

Show me someone who is living, breathing, and working in our society and I will show you many of the organs and systems, depleted and in excess, that are already taxed by our living environment. No one escapes this unless they are actively working towards maintaining amazing health.

The core of this program is to lead you into a new life. It is a life of effortless living, with excellent health, long life and plenty of time to enjoy it and accomplish wonderful things in your life. Your goal is to create this life so you will not "decline" and will have your vitality and independence well into old age.

Exercise Can Lead To An Early Death?

Exercise Can Lead To An Early Death?

Just like all things in our society, there are many myths about exercise. Dr. Wilson recently reported some of the myths surrounding exercise. There was a time when we heard stories of athletes that died suddenly, and it shocked us. This news no longer shocks us because we are hearing it more and more often. I've already explained in previous blogs about the yin and yang balance in our life and how the people that seem the healthiest, may just well be the ones that are most susceptible to diseases and an early death. While exercise provides benefits, the wrong kind of exercise can kill you.

Myth #1. Strong muscles and a beautiful body indicate you are in good health.
These may make you feel like you have health, and everyone may tell you how wonderful you look. However, I work with people who look great, but have cancer or some other disease. It is certainly wise to care for your body, but health goes far beyond muscles and fat content. Don't judge yourself and others only in terms of how much exercise you can do. Physical strength is only one parameter of health.

Myth #2. A healthy heart and healthy arteries indicate you are healthy.
This is a recent fetish. Experience with many people shows that if your body chemistry is truly in balance, your arteries and heart will be fine. Gentle exercise is beneficial for everyone, but a narrow-minded focus on cardiovascular fitness is insane. Recently a 25-year old woman consulted me complaining of fatigue and depression. She was doing aerobic exercise 3-5 evenings a week. Her heart and arteries were probably fine, but her glandular system was so exhausted she could hardly get out of bed in the morning. Her hair analysis indicated a depleted, exhausted body. Exercise was just aggravating the problem. This case is typical of the 'exhausted exerciser'.

Myth #3. Exercise rebuilds your body.
Exercise assists circulation of the blood and oxygenation of tissues, and can help rebuilding in this sense. Mild to moderate exercise is excellent for these purposes. Excessive exercise, however, can stress the heart, arteries, and glands. They are forced them to respond to stress, and to use up energy in that response. Muscles enlarge as a response or accommodation to stress. Healing and rebuilding is largely a biochemical phenomenon, requiring proper nutrients, and often requiring rest so that energy can be directed to the area in need of healing. Research supports the idea that moderate exercise can provide the same benefits as vigorous exercise. The point is, don't overdo exercise any more than you would overdo any other activity. To exercise when you feel well is great. To exercise "in order to feel well" is skating on thin ice. Today, most people are subtly malnourished due to consumption of food that is low in trace elements and other nutrients. No amount of exercise will make up for these deficiencies. It is a mistake to think you can compensate for a biochemical problem by exercising. The result will be that you will feel well for a while. Later, you will find yourself addicted to exercise. If you skip it for two days, you will feel depressed, irritable or exhausted. This occurs because exercise stimulates the adrenal glands and can keep exhausted glands functioning - like whipping a tired horse. If you stop whipping, naturally the horse will not feel like getting up.

Myth #4. Exercise cannot be harmful.
Most marathon runners are good for several years. Then they must retire because they are 'burned out'. Many professional athletes die young. Indeed, they have one of the shortest life spans of any group of adults. The slow heartbeat of professional runners is due in part to their healthy heart, but also due to a mechanism to slow their metabolism, because they put such strain on their heart. Cysteine is released from muscle tissue and slows the thyroid. The idea that since a little is good, more must be better, can be lethal when applied to exercise.

The great exercise guru, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, author of Aerobics, recently changed his mind about heavy exercise. According to his press release, he became disturbed by repeated stories of young people, supposedly in the best of shape, who developed cancer or had heart attacks at a young age. He has realized that gentle moderate exercise is plenty and no longer recommends the same level of vigorous exercise he once advocated.

Food For Thought:Clearing the Clutter On What You Should Be Eating

Food For Thought:Eating According To Your OWN Lifestyle

While you won't hear me tell you eating vegetables are bad, you will hear me say that I don't agree with vegetarianism; for everyone. I have heard all the reasons, including our teeth being shaped the way they are because we were meant to be plant eaters. While, to some degree, I believe the majority of the arguments for vegetarism, I don't subscribe to a one size fits all approach. Many of our bodies need the minerals we derive from meat. In one of my blogs, I talk about life style playing a part in how and what we eat. Our bodies are all multi-faceted. Every interplay needs to be taken into account when designing your health. This article says it all.

A young man who was very athletic, exposed himself constantly to stress during football practices. In time, he came to believe that the eating of meat (excessive fat) led to heart disease, and he had heard of football players dropping dead on the field from heart failure. This young man was very misinformed. Because of his physically stressful lifestyle, he should have made a priority of eating lean red meat on a regular basis. Instead, he eliminated all red meat from his diet and as a result became zinc deficient. Red meats are the richest food source of zinc. Consequently his copper level increased, which in turn caused his potassium level to drop precipitously. This young man also refrained from eating table salt (sodium) because he was influenced by the media regarding the dangers of sodium intake with regard to high blood pressure and heart disorders. Normal adrenal gland function is necessary to retain sodium in optimal amounts. Because many of us restrict our sodium intake and because of burnout, we have evolved into a race that has smaller adrenal glands than our more energetic and aggressive ancestors who helped build our civilization as we know it. This young man sought out a hair analysis because he was troubled by unrelenting fatigue, which was adversely affecting his athletic performance. His hair analysis report indicated extremely low sodium and potassium levels. He was advised to avoid any physically or mentally exhausting activities that would cause him to lose additional sodium and potassium. He was warned to stay away from hot showers or a jacuzzi because excessive sweating would promote excessive potassium and sodium losses. Heart failure frequently occurs when sodium and potassium levels are extremely low or extremely high. He continued to participate in football practices and unwind in the hot jacuzzi, which unfortunately cost him his life. He died of heart failure in a hot water jacuzzi. Adrenal burnout or low sodium and potassium levels are not to be taken lightly.

The Amazing Detox Properties In Your Daily Breakfast Drink

I'd really like to start this out as "Ode To The Coffee Enema" because the coffee enema is one of the most powerful healing tools we have at our disposal. No pun intended.

I really am amazed that people will accept surgery, life long pharmaceutical drugs, and even a death sentence from a doctor, yet quickly dispell the benefits of coffee enemas. Why? Because coffee enemas are not socially acceptable? Because sticking something up your rear seems "gay"? These two comments are the ones I hear most often. When it comes to your health, I say who cares what other people think! Entering into the realm of alternative care generally makes everyone feel uncomfortable at some point. Many of the therapies generally go against everything mainstream has to say is good for us. We've all heard the word enema and shuddered at some point. Enemas, like everything else, can be looked at in a good way or a bad way. It's up to you to make that choice. I usually ask people to do research and give something a try, a few times, before they form their opinion. The majority of people that come to me have never let society dictate who they were or what they should do. I always wonder why these same people let society and other people's opinions affect their choice in enemas or colonics. My goal is for people to start viewing coffee enemas for what they are; a wonderful healing tool.

An enema is “a fluid injected into the rectum for the purpose of clearing out the bowel, or of administering drugs or food.” The word itself comes from the Greek “en-hienai,” meaning to “send or inject into.” The enema has been called “one of the oldest medical procedures still used today.” Tribal women in Africa, and elsewhere, routinely use it on their children. The earliest medical text in existence, the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, from 1500 B.C., mentions it. Millennia before, the Pharaoh had a “guardian of the anus,” a special doctor, one of whose purposes was to administer the royal enema.

The Greeks wrote of the fabled cleanliness of the Egyptians, which included the internal cleansing of their systems through emetics and enemas. They employed these on 3 consecutive days a month said Herodotus (II.77) or at intervals of 3 or 4 days, according to a later historian Diodorus. The Egyptians explained to their visitors that they did this because they “believed that diseases were engendered by superfluities of the food,” a modern-sounding theory!

Enemas were known in ancient Sumeria, Babylonia, India, Greece, and China. American Indians independently invented it, using a syringe made of an animal bladder and a hollow leg bone. Pre-Columbian South Americans fashioned latex into the first rubber enema bags and tubes. In fact, there is hardly a region of the world where people did not discover or adapt the enema. It is more ubiquitous than the wheel. Enemas are found in world literature from Aristophanes to Shakespeare, Gulliver Travels to Peyton Place.

In pre-revolutionary France, a daily enema after dinner was de rigueur. It was not only considered indispensable for health but also practiced for good complexion as well. Louis XIV is said to have taken over 2,000 in his lifetime. Could this have been the source of the Sun King’s sunny disposition? For centuries, enemas were a routine home remedy. In recent times, the routine use of enemas died out. The main times that doctors employ them nowadays are before and after surgery and childbirth. Difficult and potentially dangerous barium enemas before colonic X-rays are of course still a favorite among allopathic doctors.

The coffee bean has an interesting history. It was imported in Arabia in the early 1500’s by the Sufi religious mystics, who used it to fight drowsiness while praying. It was especially prized for its medicinal qualities, in both the Near East and Europe. No one knows when the first daring soul filled an enema bag with a quart of java. What is known is that the coffee enema appeared at least as early as 1917 and was found in the prestigious Merck Manual until 1972. In the 1920’s, German scientists found that a caffeine solution could open the bile ducts and stimulate the production of bile in the liver of experimental animals.

Dr. Max Gerson used this clinically as part of a general detoxification regimen, first for tuberculosis, then cancer. Caffeine, he postulated, will travel up the hemorrhoidal to the portal vein and then to the liver. Gerson noted some remarkable effects of this procedure. For instance, patients did not need their usually prescribed painkillers once on the enemas. Many people have noted the paradoxical calming effect of coffee enemas. And while coffee enemas can relieve constipation, Gerson cautioned: “Patients have to know that the coffee enemas are not given for the function of the intestines but for the stimulation of the liver.”
Coffee enemas were an established part of medical practice when Dr. Max Gerson introduced them into cancer therapy in the 1930s. Basing himself on German laboratory work, Gerson believed that caffeine could stimulate the liver and gall bladder to discharge bile. He felt this process could contribute to the health of the cancer patient.

Although the coffee enema has been heaped with scorn, there has been some independent scientific work that gives credence to the value of the coffee enema. In 1981, for example, Dr. Lee Wattenberg and his colleagues were soon able to show that substances found in coffee, kahweol and cafestol palimate, promote the activity of a key enzyme system, glutathione S-transferase, above its normal activity. This system detoxifies a vast array of electrophiles from the bloodstream and, according to Gar Hildenbrand of the Gerson Institute, “must be regarded as an important mechanism for carcinogen detoxification.” This enzyme group is responsible for neutralizing free radicals, harmful chemicals now commonly implicated in the initiation of cancer. In mice, for example, these systems are enhanced 600% in the liver and 700% in the bowel when coffee beans are added to the mice’s diet.

Dr. Peter Lechner, who is investigating the Gerson method at the Ladneskrankenhaus of Graz, Austria, has reported that “coffee enemas have a definite effect on the colon which can be observed with an endoscope.” F.W. Cope (1977) has postulated the existence of a “tissue damage syndrome.” When cells are challenged by a poison, oxygen deprivation, malnutrition or a physical trauma they lose potassium, take on sodium and chloride, and swell up with excess water. Another scientist (Ling) has suggested that water in a normal cell is contained in a crystalline structure. Being alive requires not just the right chemicals, but also the right chemical structure. Cells normally have a preference for potassium over sodium, but when a cell is damaged it begins to prefer sodium. This craving results in a damaged ability of cells to repair themselves and to utilize energy. Further, damaged cells produce toxins; around tumors there are zones of “wounded” but still non-malignant tissue, swollen with salt and water.

Gerson believed it axiomatic that cancer could not exist in normal metabolism. He pointed to the fact that scientists often had to damage an animal’s thyroid and adrenals just to get a transplanted tumor to “take.” He directed his efforts toward creating normal metabolism in the tissue surrounding a tumor.

It is the liver and small bowel that neutralize the most common tissue toxins: polyamines, ammonia, toxic-bound nitrogen and electrophiles. These detoxification systems are enhanced by the coffee enema. Physiological chemistry and physics has stated “caffeine enemas cause dilation of bile ducts, which facilitates excretion of toxic cancer breakdown products by the liver and dialysis of toxic products across the colonic wall.” In addition, theophylline and theobromine, two other chemicals in coffee, dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut; the palimates enhance the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals from the serum; and the fluid of the enema then stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and the transit of diluted toxic bile from the duodenum and out of the rectum.

Since the enema is generally held for 15 minutes, and all the blood passes through the liver, the palimates enhance the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals from the serum; and the fluid of the enema then stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and the transit of diluted toxic bile from the duodenum and out of the rectum. Furthermore, since all the blood passes through the liver every three minutes, “these enemas represent a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall.” The research by Sherry Rodgers, MD author of Detox or Die, suggests that there is no stimulatory effect of the adrenals from a coffee enema. The personal experience of Gabriel Cousens, MD supports her findings.

Does Your Liver Need An Overhaul?

You May Benefit From A Liver Cleanse

I routinely get the same surprised look when I talk to people about the importance of their liver. Their next statement is usually said with a little bit of a snuff, "I don't drink alcohol, my liver is fine!" This showed me two things.

The first is that somehow the liver became a dirty organ! Our liver is actually on a hierarchy system. If you were to drown, your brain would shut down before your liver. That's how important your body sees your liver. All cellular health, all bodily functions can be traced back to liver function.

The second is how misled people are about the processes of the liver. Alcohol is not the main factor in liver damage. Did you know that every time you breathe, your liver filters the toxins? Your liver changes vitamins and minerals into a special enzymatic formula exactly identical for your body to use. Every thing you eat or drink, your liver purifies for you. Your thoughts, feelings and emotions are all processed and housed in the liver. All toxins, whether they are tangible or intangible are all processed by the liver.

I want to address the overall fascination with "the quick fix". I have yet to find a quick fix for anything that has long lasting beneficial results. It amazes me that so many people accept words without logically thinking through the words. I have also heard people tell me that they took a bottle of pills from the health food store or did 1 olive oil cleanse, and now their liver is clean. If a depleted liver started at birth, or before, went all these years before you took a bottle of pills, logically, how could this fix it? We are all muti-faceted beings. Our body system, our emotions, and our spirituality have so many layers and depths to them, why would we not assume toxic build-up would have layers as well?

Every person that is not actively cleansing and rebuilding his or her liver is living with an impaired liver. Children do not function with their liver at 100%. Toxins and emotions of the mother are passed down into the fetus causing a potential weakening of the liver. Your liver will never tell you directly that it is not functioning correctly, until it is critical, but signs in the body can always be seen, sometimes as early as childhood. If you experience major persisting difficulties in your physical and emotional health, your liver may be congested with toxic compounds that are trapped in deposits of hardened bile. There is hardly any health condition that is not directly or indirectly linked with restricted liver performance. Any form of congestion in the liver may also result in fear, anger, impatience, greed, depression, disease and cynicism. These expressions of discontent may indicate that the body is increasingly cut off from the circuit of nourishment and vital energy. Cleansing the liver of major impurities can help restore balance, harmony and happiness in every facet of individual life.

When the body speaks
Unlike the stomach, for example, the liver rarely tells you directly when it is upset or if it needs your attention. It does tell you indirectly, though, when it starts to perform poorly. A skin irritation, weak eyesight, a bowel problem, an irregular menstrual cycle, a recurring headache, weight gain, loss of energy, sudden aging, restricted blood vessels, bloated intestines, digestive problems, breathing difficulties, memory and concentration loss, pain in the joints, or any major illness such as heart disease, cancer, MS, diabetes or Alzheimer's, to mention a few, would not occur if the liver were in optimum shape.

In fact, because the liver is responsible for processing, converting, distributing and maintaining the body's fuel supply consisting of nutrients and energy, impeding these functions not only affects the body as a whole, but also the health of every single cell. Through dietary mistakes, stress, an unbalanced lifestyle, the use of drugs and chemical poisons such as food additives and artificial sweeteners (Aspartame), the liver bile ducts become clogged with deposits of hardened bile or "gallstones." The resulting impairment of digestive functions reduces the nutrient supply to the trillions of cells in the body and may become a major cause of illness. Gallstones in the liver An estimated one billion people in the world will suffer gall bladder disease at some stage in their life. In the United States, 20 million adults suffer from attacks of gallstones every year. In many cases, treatment consists of removing the gallbladder, at the cost of $5,000 or more per operation. Yet there are many more people, including those suffering a chronic illness such as heart disease, arthritis, MS or cancer, who have hundreds, if not thousands of gallstones blocking the bile ducts of the liver. A liver congested with gallstones may be one of the most common, yet rarely recognized causes of illness today. Most people assume that gallstones occur only in the gallbladder. This assumption is wrong. Most gallstones are actually formed in the liver and comparatively few occur in the gall bladder. This can be verified by anyone doing a liver cleanse, regardless of whether he/she is a lay person, a medical doctor, a scientist or someone who no longer has a gall bladder and is thought to be free of gallstones altogether. I am repeatedly asked the intriguing question: Why in mainstream medicine is there is no reference for the occurrence of gallstones in the liver? The reason for this important "missing link" may lie in the theories of modern medicine that suggest gallstones can only be formed in the gallbladder and not in the liver. Of course, it doesn't help that the non-calcified hardened bile deposits (gallstones) congesting the liver bile ducts are invisible to X-rays. Because bile and these stones are made of the same stuff, ultrasound scans also miss them. Only in some rare cases, where tens of thousands of stones have accumulated in the liver, has ultrasound technology been able to detect a few hundred of them. This makes modern diagnostic tools for detecting gallstones in the liver virtually ineffective.

On the other hand, a natural health practitioner who knows the signs and indications of gallstones in the liver and gall bladder can quite easily determine the degree of gallstone formation in these organs. But even in alternative or complementary medicine, there is rarely mention of an effective therapy that can actually remove gallstones safely and without pain. Even if all other disease-causing factors are eliminated, but gallstones are still present in the liver, they remain the harbingers of future illness.

Reaping the benefits of cleansing the liver
Anyone suffering any of the following symptoms or similar ones is likely to have hundreds, if not thousands, of gallstones blocking the bile ducts of the liver:

Food cravings, diarrhea, constipation, hernia, flatulence, hemorrhoids, breathing difficulties, hepatitis and other types of infection, high cholesterol, pancreatitis, heart disease, brain disorders, duodenal ulcers, nausea and vomiting, a "bilious" or angry personality, depression, impotence and other sexual problems, prostate diseases, urinary problems, hormonal imbalances, PMT and menopausal symptoms, problems with vision, puffy eyes, all skin disorders, liver spots especially on the back of the hands and facial area, excessive weight or wasting, strong shoulder and back pain, a pain at the top of the shoulder blade, frozen shoulder, stiff neck, dark color under the eyes, coated tongue, scoliosis, gout, asthma, headaches and migraines, tooth and gum problems, yellowness of the eyes and skin, sciatica, numbness and paralysis of legs, joint diseases, osteoporosis, obesity, chronic fatigue, kidney diseases, cancer, MS, ME, cold extremities, excessive heat and perspiration in the upper part of the body, very greasy hair, to name some.

By removing the stones through a series of liver cleanses and consequently maintaining a reasonably healthy diet and lifestyle, the liver returns to its natural efficiency, and most, if not all, symptoms of discomfort begin to subside. Energy and well-being notably increase with each cleanse. Sweeping the liver clean eliminates thousands of bits of poisonous substances that have helped form the stones and block thousands of liver bile ducts. Cleansing the liver bile ducts from gallstones may indeed be one of the most important and powerful procedures around to dramatically improve one's health and raise the body's vibration. By re-opening the bile ducts, the body's energy circuits becomes restored and healing can take place on all levels of body, mind and spirit.

Deadly Sweetners

Artificial sweeteners are NOT a healthy alternative to sugar

Aspartame (NutraSweet brand name) is probably the most controversial food additive in history. Look up aspartame on the internet, and you’ll find page after page of information – most of it warnings on its dangers. Books have been written on aspartame dangers, there is even a video, “Sweet Misery,” depicting its dangers. The State of New Mexico initiated legislation to try to ban aspartame.

With so many negative reports about aspartame, it is important to understand how aspartame was approved. In approximately 1967, G.D. Searle, manufacturer of aspartame, first began the process of seeking FDA approval for their artificial sweetener as a food additive.

What followed were years of controversy. Early on, respected neuroscientist and researcher, Dr. John W. Olney, warned the manufacturer that oral intake of glutamate, aspartate and cysteine, the excitotoxic amino acids found in aspartame, cause brain damage in mice. His findings were confirmed by another researcher, Ann Reynolds, who was hired by G. D. Searle. (Claiming an oversight, G. D. Searle did not inform the FDA of this study until after the approval of aspartame.) Petitions by Dr. Olney prompted an FDA investigation which found G.D. Searle’s testing procedures to be full of inaccurate results and manipulated test data. Following the investigation, a grand jury probe began, but was thwarted six months later when the lead U.S. Attorney assigned to the case, Samuel Skinner, suddenly resigned and accepted a position at the law firm representing G.D. Searle. About this same time (1977) the battle weary G.D. Searle company sought to turn the situation around by appointing, as their new CEO, former Illinois congressman and Washington “insider” Donald Rumsfeld (most recently the former Secretary of Defense). Although it took several years, Rumsfeld’s political pull, rather than the scientific evidence, eventually resulted in the approval of Aspartame—through his associations in Washington and with President Ronald Reagan.

A study by the American Cancer Society, involving 80,000 women found that the test group who used aspartame products actually gained more weight than the group who didn’t use it. When Ronald Reagan (a good friend of G.D. Searle, manufacturer of aspartame) took office in 1981 he fired the current FDA Commissioner who refused to approve aspartame. President Reagan then hired Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes as commissioner. By this time there was so much controversy over aspartame that a Board of Inquiry was established. The Board advised Dr. Hayes not to approve aspartame. Dr. Hayes overruled his own Board and aspartame was approved for use in November 1981. Shortly (four months) after Dr. Hayes won approval for aspartame he left his position as FDA Commissioner and took a lucrative position with G.D. Searle’s Public Relations firm.

For the history of aspartame, the following websites provide the pre approval and research data that led to the FDA approval of aspartame:

(1983) Even the National Soft Drink Association drafted an objection to permitting the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages. At that time, it was well documented that when liquid aspartame is stored above 85 degrees it breaks down into DKP and formaldehyde, both known toxins. Formaldehyde binds tightly to DNA, making it difficult to remove from the body. And, because it is a "cumulative toxin", even small amounts can become significantly toxic over time.

Why exactly is Aspartame so dangerous?
Aspartame is an excitotoxin—a substance that excites or over-stimulates nerve cells. An excitotoxin basically excites neural cells to death. This occurs in the brain and in peripheral nerves because the key components in aspartame are absorption accelerants and can easily cross the blood brain barrier. The blood brain barrier is a system of specialized capillary structures that are designed to prevent toxic substances from entering the brain. Aspartame actually changes the brain’s chemistry. Some people react immediately, but more ominous, is that for many, the damage is slow, silent and can be irreversible with long term use.
Over 75% of all food related complaints received by the FDA are associated with aspartame. Because of the high volume of complaints, the FDA has documented 92 common aspartame related symptoms. The majority of the symptoms are neurological, because aspartame destroys the nervous system. Some of the most serious are brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma. Among the most common complaints registered with the FDA are: headache, heart rate irregularities, dizziness, dramatic mood swings, nausea, abdominal pain, blindness, memory loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, rashes, sleep problems, blood sugar problems, sexual dysfunction, difficulty breathing, seizures and convulsions. Independent research shows that seizures are one of the most common reactions to aspartame.

Populations that consume aspartame are known to develop symptoms commonly diagnosed as Multiple Schlerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s.
The components of Aspartame: 40% aspartic acid, 50% phenylalanine and 10% methanol.

Although aspartic acid is produced in minute amounts by the body, the amount ingested by consuming aspartame is so excessive that it destroys neurons. It creates so many neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain that they are literally excited to death.

Phenylalanine is also produced naturally by the body, like aspartic acid, in very small amounts. The elevated levels of phenylalanine as found in aspartame, damage the hypothalamus, the gland responsible for weight regulation, and has also been determined to cause schizophrenia and susceptibility to seizures. According to Dr. H.J. Roberts, the phenylalanine in aspartame breaks down the seizure threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage and violence.

Methanol is classified by the EPA as a “cumulative” poison. Even more dangerous, the form of methanol in aspartame, “free” methanol, metabolizes even faster when heated above 85 degrees. According to neurosurgeon, and researcher, Dr. Russell Blaylock, there is alarming research that demonstrates the dangerous relationship of sudden cardiac death and athletes consuming beverages containing aspartame. (http://www.russellblaylockmd.com/). Supporters of aspartame (funded by Monsanto, who now own G.D. Searle) make claims that fruit juices and alcohol also contain methanol, which is created in the manufacturing process, proving methanol is safe. While this may be true, it is vital to point out that fruit juices and alcohol contain an essential methanol neutralizer—ethanol. Aspartame does not contain ethanol, and therefore has nothing within its structure to neutralize the toxic effects of methanol.

Aspartame breaks down within 20 minutes at room temperature into several primary toxic and dangerous ingredients: ¨ DKP (diketopiperizine) when ingested, converts to a near duplicate of a powerful brain tumor causing agent¨ Formic Acid - toxin that shuts down the energy processes of cells¨ Formaldehyde—embalming fluid¨ Methanol -wood alcohol, causes blindness.

Diet soda consumption is now being linked to obesity. Touted as an aid for weight loss and weight management, aspartame may actually have the opposite effect. Aspartame may actually stimulate the appetite and bring on a craving for carbohydrates according to an article in Technology Review. Researchers believe that any kind of sweet taste signals body cells to store carbohydrates and fats which cause the body to crave more food. Aspartame and it’s cousin, the excitotoxin MSG, are both documented to increase appetite and damage the hypothalamus gland, which is responsible for regulating and balancing weight.

If you’re thinking about switching from aspartame to Splenda (sucralose)… think again! Tests done on sucralose reveal it can cause up to 40% shrinkage of the thymus, a gland that is critical to the immune system. It also causes swelling of the kidneys and liver, and liver calcification. Although Splenda’s motto is “made from sugar...so it tastes like sugar”, the chemical structure is much different. Splenda has basically been chlorinated. 3 hydroxyl groups (atoms composed of hydrogen and oxygen) are selectively removed and replaced with 3 atoms of chlorine. The sugar molecule has now been transformed into a chlorocarbon—a chemical agent that has no place in the human diet.

The dangers are real, and the benefits are false.

In a Congressional record, one doctor states that his studies showed when his patients stopped using aspartame they lost an average of 19 lbs. per person. Any advantages people perceive they are gaining from eliminating real sugar, by exchanging it for aspartame or sucralose, are certainly nullified by the far reaching, documented damage they cause. Nothing this dangerous is worth the risk just to save a few calories. Sound scientific research, and study after study prove that aspartame’s beneficial claims are based solely on marketing hype and inaccuracies. The components of aspartame are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be toxic to the human body and ineffective for weight loss.

The patent on aspartame has recently expired. This means that aspartame will soon be found under a multitude of new names. Currently the most common aspartame names on the market are NutraSweet, Equal, Equal Measure, Saccharin, Spoonful, Neotame, Sunette, Sweet & Safe, Sweet One, and Canderal. Unfortunately, there are over 9,000 products on the market containing aspartame and sucralose. It is even in prescription drugs and some children’s chewable vitamins. The scope of this article barely touches on the dangers and deceptions of artificial sweeteners.

Aspartame is a multi billion dollar industry, so the chances of having it pulled off the market by the FDA are pretty slim...unless of course everyone stops purchasing it!

The point of this article is not to point fingers and "look at the bad man" but it is about personal responsibility. Only YOU can make a difference in your own life and your own health.
If this article has moved you to look for healthier alternatives, go to your local health food store, and look for Stevia, agave syrup, maple syrup, evaporated cane juice, and more.

Thyroid Repair

Nature's Own Thyroid Repair
Fulvic Acid has been shown to stimulate, nourish, and repair thyroid function with a natural solution.

Fulvic Acid can prevent and treat thyroid disease, including hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Graves Disease and Wilson's Syndrome, which are the underlying causes of many serious illnesses.

A prime objective for anyone with a thyroid problem is to eliminate intake of all toxins, while removing toxic buildup within the body. Thyroid malfunction, both overactive and underactive, is generally due to autoimmune response by the body. This is where the body's immune system produces antibodies which attack the gland because the tissues seem foreign to the body. Normal hormone production is upset. Generally, the cause is due to buildup of dangerous toxins, chlorinated substances, viruses, pathogens, infections, pesticides, altered and decreased production of enzymes or hormones in the tissues of the thyroid gland. Such conditions can also cause lumps, tumors, and cancer.

Outpatient medical hospital studies on overactive thyroid had 90.9% cure rate within a six month period when patients were treated with a Fulvic medication. Your first line of defense is to start supplementation with an appropriate high quality Fulvic preparation. Fulvic is a natural water soluble substance of plant origin. It contains many healing phytochemicals and enzymes which readily disperse throughout the body, even to the interior of cells. Clinical medical school and hospital studies show that specially prepared Fulvic extracts regulate abnormal thyroid hormone secretion as a result of their ability to regulate RNA and DNA (cyclic nucleotides) at the cellular level. Similar studies also show that fulvic acts as an immunomodulator, regulating immune system function.

Fulvic is one of the safest and most powerful antiviral substances known. Although they are not antibiotics in the technical sense of the word, as prescription drugs are, their antibiotic-like effect is comparable to the power of penicillin in equally small amounts. Unlike antibiotics, fulvic may be used indefinitely without creating any antibiotic resistant strains of disease which are common problems with pharmaceutical drugs.

Humic extracts, especially Fulvics, provide a natural chelatin therapy. They detoxify the body, the liver, and the digestive tract, by attaching to toxic buildup, including heavy metals, chlorination byproducts, etc., where they disarm, neutralize, and remove them as waste products. Fulvic also works as nature's most powerful antioxidants, neutralizing dangerous free radicals, as well as supplying hormone stimulating micronutrients.

Outpatient medical hospital studies on thyroid tumors, using Fulvic, has a 90% success rate, with 80% having complete cures. The underactive thyroid gland requires sufficient organic iodine to function properly. Organic means that it must come from a plant source, as part of a carbon molecule. High quality, safe, and readily available iodine is found in Fulvic. Another safe and effective supplemental source of iodine comes from kelp. A dose even as high as 2,000 to 3,000 mg of kelp daily is safe and effective.

Avoid chlorine and fluoride like the plague, including fluoride found in toothpaste and added to drinking water. Dioxin, a dangerous chlorine related compound found throughout the food chain, is one cause of low thyroid. Another is likely related to toxic substances which are produced when drinking water is chlorinated, and later when chlorinated drinking water mixes with plant phytochemicals in food. Rather than feeding the body's endocrine glands as nature intended, the many hormone-like plant micronutrients found in food are altered by chlorine, and turned into mutagens that do permanent damage to the glands. Also, serious deficiency of valuable phytochemicals in modern-day diets may be responsible for undernourished hormonal functions in those with otherwise healthy glands.

The phosphoric acid used in soft drinks can also contain fluorine, which is equally implicated. Chlorine, fluorine, and fluoride are chemically related to iodine, and compete with it, blocking iodine receptors in the thyroid gland.

It is a well known fact that an excess of one mineral can cause a deficiency in another. A high amount of copper in the body is common to reduced thyroid function. Too much copper can inhibit the function of zinc, which is essential to the thyroid conversion process along with manganese, iodine, iron, and selenium. Fulvic in the diet assists with maintaining proper balance. They chelate and remove excess copper ( or other minerals or heavy metals), and help to nourish by supplying safe natural organic plant forms of minerals in the proper balance as nature intended.

Another highly successful approach for underactive thyroid conditions, or hypothyroidism, is to supplement with a natural desiccated thyroid glandular. This is best obtained from a source other than pharmaceutical, because most thyroid replacement drug therapies are synthetic. The best natural glandulars come from livestock raised organically in New Zealand, where extremely careful control against animal diseases in maintained. Studies show that when used properly, these natural glandulars can help revive the body's thyroid function. With the use of natural glandulars, reduction, or even possible eventual elimination of the need for supplemental thyroid may be achieved.

Conventional Medicine has failed miserably with treatment of thyroid problems. Their procedure uses THS blood screening to lab test for low thyroid levels, which is often very inaccurate because it only identifies part of the picture. It does not show if the thyroid hormones are actually working correctly in the body. Many people that exhibit the common symptoms don't receive proper treatment because their blood levels appear normal.

There are important factors involved in getting proper treatment. You must find a doctor that understands the proper tests and treatments, and is willing to use natural desiccated thyroid. If your doctor does not understand these methods, insisting on blood work alone and prescribing synthetic thyroid drugs, find a doctor who does. Pharmaceutical companies produce synthetic levothyroxine versions of "inactive" thyroid that very often don't work. These products have T4 thyroid which depends on the liver to do the conversion to T3, which is the most active form of the hormone. In many cases the synthetic versions don't convert properly, even though blood tests look normal. Patients treated with synthetics often experience adverse symptoms and feel much better when given the natural desiccated thyroid, containing T4, T3, T2, and T1 hormones. Recently, the drug company manufacturing the synthetic thyroid known as Synthroid has been undergoing lawsuits for inconsistency and quality problems, but sadly even those legal actions don't address the real issues, and let them off the hook for more serious legal issues. Studies show that Synthroid and related synthetics can deplete the body's bone mass by as much as 13%.

Scientific and medical studies show that there is hope to naturally repair and restore proper thyroid function. When the body has been cleansed and has accumulated proper levels of nutrients, the thyroid has a chance to begin working again. In many cases, nutritional therapists have seen that thyroid function resumes after only a few months, evident as body temperature begins to rise. A careful and cautious nutritional approach, with low levels of natural thyroid glandular supplements and the nutrients and procedures outlined in this article will provide the best and safest treatment possible.

Your MICROWAVE is Killing Your Kids

Your MICROWAVE is Killing Your Kids
And you too

Microwave cooking is one of the most important causes of ill health. It is certainly one of the most ignored.
There was a lawsuit in 1991 in Oklahoma. A woman named Norma Levitt had hip surgery, but was killed by a simple blood transfusion when a nurse "warmed the blood for the transfusion in a microwave oven!"
Logic suggests that if heating is all there is to microwave cooking, then it doesn't matter how something is heated. Blood for transfusions is routinely warmed, but not in microwave ovens. Does it not therefore follow that microwaving cooking does something quite different?
There have been very few scientific studies done on the effect of eating food microwaved food. This is rather surprising when you think about the fact that microwaves have been with us for only a few decades - and that in that time the incidence of many diseases has continued to increase.
Two researchers, Blanc and Hertel, confirmed that microwave cooking significantly changes food nutrients. Hertel previously worked as a food scientist for several years with one of the major Swiss food companies. He was fired from his job for questioning procedures in processing food because they denatured it. Then worked with Blanc at the Swiss Federal Institute of Biochemistry and the University Institute for Biochemistry. They studied the effect that microwaved food had on eight individuals, by taking blood samples immediately after eating. They found that after eating microwaved food, haemoglobin levels decreased. "These results show anaemic tendencies. The situation became even more pronounced during the second month of the study". Who knows what results they would have found if they had studied people who ate microwaved food for a year or more?
The violent change that microwaving causes to the food molecules forms new life forms called radiolytic compounds. These are mutations that are unknown in the natural world. Ordinary cooking also causes the formation of some radiolytic compounds (which is no doubt one reason why it is better to eat plenty of raw food), but microwaving cooking causes a much greater number. This then causes deterioration in your blood and immune system. In addition, they found that the number of leucocytes increases after eating microwaved food - something which haematologists take very seriously, because this is often a sign of highly harmful effects, such as poisoning. Also, after eating microwaved food, cholesterol levels increased. Hertel said "Common scientific belief states that cholesterol values usually alter slowly over longer periods of time. In this study, the markers increased rapidly after the consumption of the microwaved vegetables." He believes his study tends to confirm new scientific data that suggest cholesterol may rapidly increase in the blood secondary to acute stress. "Also," he added, "blood cholesterol levels are less influenced by cholesterol content of food than by stress factors. Such stress-causing factors can apparently consist of foods which contain virtually no cholesterol - the microwaved vegetables."

In Summary: Blanc and Hertel found that eating microwaved food:
Increases cholesterol
Increases white blood cell numbers
Decreases red blood cell numbers
Causes production of radiolytic compounds (compounds unknown in nature)
RUSSIANS BAN MICROWAVE OVENS
After the World War II, the Russians also experimented with microwave ovens. From 1957 up to recently, their research has been carried out mainly at the Institute of Radio Technology at Klinsk, Byelorussia. According to US researcher William Kopp, who gathered much of the results of Russian and German research - and was apparently prosecuted for doing so (J. Nat. Sci, 1998; 1:42-3) - the following effects were observed by Russian forensic teams:
1. Heating prepared meats in a microwave sufficiently for human consumption created:
*d-Nitrosodiethanolamine (a well-known cancer-causing agent)
*Destabilization of active protein biomolecular compounds
*Creation of a binding effect to radioactivity in the atmosphere
*Creation of cancer-causing agents within protein-hydrosylate compounds in milk and cereal grains.
2. Microwave emissions also caused alteration in the catabolic (breakdown) behavior of glucoside - and galactoside - elements within frozen fruits when thawed in this way.
3. Microwaves altered catabolic behavior of plant-alkaloids when raw, cooked or frozen vegetables were exposed for even very short periods.
4. Cancer-causing free radicals were formed within certain trace-mineral molecular formations in plant substances, especially in raw root vegetables.
5. Ingestion of micro-waved foods caused a higher percentage of cancerous cells in blood.
6. Due to chemical alterations within food substances, malfunctions occurred in the lymphatic system, causing degeneration of the immune system=s capacity to protect itself against cancerous growth.
7. The unstable catabolism of micro-waved foods altered their elemental food substances, leading to disorders in the digestive system.
8. Those ingesting micro-waved foods showed a statistically higher incidence of stomach and intestinal cancers, plus a general degeneration of peripheral cellular tissues with a gradual breakdown of digestive and excretory system function.
9. Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritional value of all foods studied, particularly:
*A decrease in the bioavailability of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotrophics
*Destruction of the nutritional value of nucleoproteins in meats
*Lowering of the metabolic activity of alkaloids, glucosides, galactosides and nitrilosides (all basic plant substances in fruits and vegetables)
*Marked acceleration of structural disintegration in all foods.
As a result microwave ovens were banned in Russia in 1976; the ban was lifted after Perestroika.
Standing in front of a microwave is also highly damaging to your health. Perhaps you have already felt this intuitively? We know that cells explode in the microwave - just fry an egg in your microwave. We are made up of trillions of cells. So work out how many are getting damaged if you stand in front of your microwave for 5-10 minutes.
A very important piece of information if you are cutting microwaved foods out of your diet, many restaurants use microwaved cooking, even `health' restaurants.

How do I Really Know if I am Toxic?

Have you had your daily dose of toxins today?

If you have breathed in the air or washed your hair, brushed your teeth, shaved, washed dishes, taken a shower, used lotion or facial care, or done any house cleaning, you have had your hefty dose of toxins.

Like it or not, agree with it or not, we are existing in a far more toxic and hostile environment than our bodies were designed to handle. Experts have shown that almost every health problem-from learning disorders to cancer to heart disease-is aggravated by the approximate 1,000% increase in lead levels in our bones. In 1999, it was reliably reported that hearts with some form of disease have 20,000 times more toxic heavy metals than healthy hearts.

Human exposure to heavy metals has risen dramatically in the last 50 years, however, as a result of an exponential increase in the use of heavy metals in industrial processes and products. Today, chronic exposure comes from mercury-amalgam dental fillings, lead in paint and tap water, chemical residues in processed foods, and "personal care" products (cosmetics, shampoo and other hair products, mouthwash, toothpaste, soap). In today's industrial society, there is no escaping exposure to toxic chemicals and metals.

A recently concluded "Body Burden" study by New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Environmental Working Group was reviewed by University of Oregon Professor Joseph Thornton: "It shows the universality of chemical contamination of people's bodies," Thornton said. All the studies "confirm the general message that everybody in our society has these chemicals building up. Some people have it worse than others, but everyone has it. No one is clean anymore."

Cleansing our bodies on a regular basis is a must. This is not a new practice, born from our chemical world. Cleansing and Detoxifying are an age long traditions of health that dates back before the birth of allopathic medicine. Instead of putting the negative spin on it like above, we can reclaim our natural roots in purification and detoxification, and throughly enjoy renewing our body, mind, and spirit.

Why Food Is Our Medicine: The Universe Seeks Balance

Food is Our Medicine

Unfortunately this is no longer a popular choice in lifestyles. We are in the age of fast food and fast lives. No one has the energy or time to spend hours preparing foods like when we grew up. We have bills, we have work, we have traffic, and we have school lunches for our kids (Don't get me started on that one!) I want you to know that I am in no way attacking anyone’s lifestyle. It is what it is. You may think, everyone is doing it so it must be nutritionally okay, but look how overweight of a society we are. Look at our children. We are too tired to do anything else and we are just plain use to the taste of laboratory food. What I teach is INFORMED choices. I do not ask anyone to adhere to my way of life. No matter what you choose, make sure it comes from a place of information. This is also called personal responsibility. In my life, I weigh out every word I say and every choice I am going to make. I do a quick 360° to see what the effects of my actions will be. Then take my informed choice and put it into action because I am ready to take the consequences of my decisions, no matter how unpopular. This is what I teach. If you are making an informed choice, no one can make you bad or wrong for your choices.

I studied Macrobiotics for years. I love the system. It is extreme in our American standard. Although I do not practice the food choices of macrobiotics, I do integrate many of the principals behind the system. Macrobiotics really doesn’t have to do with food; it has more to do with the energetics of the food and the yin and yang balance. What an amazing re-discovery. If you search back into ancient texts and cultural lifestyles, you will see that food really was not ever consumed solely for it's nutrients, but more for it's energy. That is why you hear so much about RAW foods and ALIVE foods for cancer and other disease treatments. Consuming organically grown, live food, will not only have more nutritional value for you than laboratory foods, but also more energetic value. We are energetic beings. Our atoms vibrate at a very fast rate. Look at your hand under the right microscope and you will see that you are indeed vibrating energy.

Humanity has single-handedly depleted the soil, the water, and the air of vital nutrients while replacing nutrients with poisons. What has been done to one element has been done to the others as well. I will use the land for this example. We use fertilizers and hormones on our gardens and flowers to make them big and beautiful, yet this is causing them to suck more nutrients from the land. We no longer compost garden and we rely on an external, false, chemical laden way of re-mineralizing the land. We use pesticides and herbicides. We kill bugs and spray vegetation to prevent animals and other "pests" from attacking. The more the nutrients are lacking in plants, the more pests are attracted to them. This is all very much like what we are doing to our own bodies when we artificially feed it with laboratory food and vitamins from a bottle every day of our lives. Because we are all interconnected, what happens to something on earth has a ripple effect, and affects us all.

I look very much at constitutions of each individual person to determine a healthy program. The majority of us are all Sanpaku; yin dominated. We need yang therapies and yang food to balance us out. Too much yang, and we tip the scales one more time. There are some people that can flourish on a vegetarian lifestyle, but before deciding on the type of food you should eat, your whole lifestyle needs to be evaluated and taken into consideration. What are your environmental influences? What are your lifestyle, relationships, job, workout schedule, and thought patterns? These situations all impact the food you can take into your body to remain within balance. You can take 2 people with the same body constitution but lead completely different lives. The person you expect to live disease-free because they seem to have a care-free life, may be the very person that ends up dying from cancer or an auto accident. They may be the person that is living most out of balance. You've heard the expression, the good die young? It may be that the "good" are living most out of balance. I'm not saying go do "bad" things that will have a detrimental effect on you or someone else. I'm saying that good and bad do not exist in a universe that seeks balance. All things exist and we put judgement on them to make them bad or good. We have to impose such judgements to set safe society standards; this is necessary. But as far as your health goes, don't eat all whole organic foods because you think they are "good" and "good things will heal you". That's the "go to college, get a good job, buy a house, find a spouse, have kids, buy a dog, line all of this with the proverbial picket fense and your life will be a bed of roses" sydrome. Life doesn't work that way, and neither does our health. The majority of people I know that pursue a healthy, holistic life have just as many problems as the people that live by society standards. Because the universe (and the body) are always seeking balance between all forces, what seems healthy, may not be healthy. Every single thing that happens to you in life, from a paper cut to a car accident to a disease is all part of the universe (and your body) seeking balance. The universe does not judge right or wrong, good or bad. It only knowns balance. you want to be vegetarian, make an informed choice about it. Don't do it because several groups of people support it and say you should only eat vegetables. Undergo diagnostic testing with someone that will take all of your life in to consideration. Have mineral testing done to find out what YOU are lacking. Our mineral balance is as unique as our fingerprints. You can have similar or the same health issues as someone else, but be lacking or over abundant in a completely different complex of minerals. Taking what someone else is taking,

Food can be a great medicine. It was created to be synergistic. There is not one enzyme or nutrient that can be isolated into the magic bullet. Nutrition is a synergistic blend of all the factors. A bottle of pills cannot produce something as complex and synergistic as a natural occurring whole food source.

Antioxidants: The worst thing we put on our skin and take on a daily basis!!!!

Anti-Oxidants: The worst thing we put on our skin and take on a daily basis!!!!
I used to follow the same line of thinking as the majority of all Americans, I needed to take anti-oxidant supplements and also put them on my skin every day. After all, who wants cellular breakdown?! Who wants to prematurely age?! Not me.
Boy, was I glad that cereal, powerbars, breads, snacks, and even drinks are now labeled as "Packed with Anti-oxidants"!
But in the boom in the anti-aging market of anti-oxidants, I noticed something interesting. People were looking older and feeling older. Really fast. This shift seemed to happen over night. People were aging right before my eyes. Cancer is up, degenerative diseases are up, memory and focus are down. What is going on? Our parents and grandparents didnt look and feel the way we do at our age. And how did they ever make through withOUT having their anti-oxidants to protect them? Our environment is toxic, that's for sure, but surely our environment wasn't changing at warp speed?!
Then the light bulb went off inside me. What changed was our anti-oxidant use. Then I went on a journey of not only logically thinking about what the term anti-oxidants really means, but I researched medical journals and alternative therapies, talked to doctors and cancer survivors, and most importantly looked at other cultures. What I found astounded me.
I want to preface this with saying that I do not hold a high believe in supplementation. Supplements, herbs, vitamins and minerals were all meant to rebalance a situation in thebody; SHORT TERM. But herbs and supplements have become a staple in our society. They are now touted like pharmaceuticals; once you need them, you will always need them. I am surprised that when people found out the original food pyramid was actually bad for us, they didn't replace 3 of those levels with supplements that we HAVE to have. We are each born with reserves in our body. Our bodies are so amazing, that if working correctly, they produce just about everything we need naturally. When we supplement, we make our body lazy. Our bodies fail to produce a very vital function of our health. Our body does a scan for certain substances in the body, if the body can detect the substance presence, it doesn't manufacture it. If something goes unused long enough, it gets lazy. Just look at our muscles when we stop working out for 6 months. Now I do agree, there is a huge benefit to short term supplementation and supplementation while your body is undergoing changes, but I think we need to look at what we are doing to our body and why. Does it make sense? And I am still from the old school thought that food is medicine, even though people are saying our food lacks nutritional substance these days. I will go into that more here
Every cell of our body has it's own natural antioxidant protection. In fact, there are 3 major natural antioxidents present in our cells naturally.
Antioxidants: The Good, The Bad and the Evil
Bits taken from a multitude of sources including Beck, Christopher Wanjek and Dr. Warburg
It used to be so simple, a battle between good and evil. Rogue chemicals called free radicals roam about the body like brazen street punks, the story went, smashing cellular walls and roughing up innocent DNA molecules, causing cancers and the diseases of middle and old age. Their flagrant disregard for the law would continue unchecked if it weren't for swashbuckling antioxidants swooping in on the wings of dietary supplements, disarming the free radicals of their menacing electrons and converting them into respectable molecular citizens. At least that's how the theory went. And the public bought it - both the story and millions of doses of antioxidant supplements, which they believed would reduce disease, boost system performance and maybe even slow the aging clock. But as a bewildering cascade of contradictory, inconclusive and outright negative research reports over the past several years suggests, the human body isn't governed by a B-movie script. The antioxidant story isn't as simple as some - largely, those who make and sell them - would have us believe. "Free radicals are as good as they are bad," says Walter Bortz of Stanford University Medical School. He is a past president of the American Geriatric Society and author of several popular books on aging and scientific articles on vitamins. He says that antioxidants in high doses may do the body harm; in other cases they may help. We simply don't know yet which ones do which and when. "It's a very complicated story," he says. You know many antioxidants by name, whether you take them or not: vitamins C and E, beta carotene and selenium are just the most common. Their purported health benefits adorn the packaging for everything from cereals to cosmetics. One can easily walk through the aisles of any grocery, drug or vitamin store thinking that antioxidants are scientifically validated wonder pills. They're not, "although the data don't seem to make any difference to the sales of supplements," says Richard Veech, chief of the Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, who has reported on the interplay of free radicals and antioxidants for more than 30 years. Americans spent $31 billion on vitamin supplements in 1999, according to the U.S. General Accounting Office. Nearly $2 billion of that was for vitamins E and C, beta carotene and selenium, according to Nutrition Business Journal. Up to 30 percent of the population is taking antioxidant supplements regularly, according to the American Heart Association. While the efficacy of antioxidant supplements remains gospel in the health-marketing community, Bortz says the accumulating scientific record does not verify it. For every study that shows benefits, he says, there is another study that doesn't.
What distinguishes diseased cells from healthy ones? All cells derive their energy from glucose, but healthy cells burn glucose in oxygen by oxidation, while unhealthy cells ferment glucose anaerobically, producing large amounts of lactic acid. Fermentation produces only 1/6 the energy of oxidation, so cancer cells are perpetually starving for energy, and consequently have huge appetites for sugar. This wasteful metabolism becomes self-sustaining and dominant unless the oxygen level is sharply increased. Healthy cells which have sufficient oxygen and nutrients manufacture an enzyme coating around them that protects them for invasion. These enzymes are catalase, reductase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. So long as a cell maintains this enzyme coating around itself, it is safe from invasion by viruses, and oxidation cannot harm it. Oxygen-starved cells are unable to produce enough enzymes to fortify their cell wall and are thus more vulnerable to invasion by the always-present viruses.
So with antioxidants and free radicals now seen as playing dual roles of good guys and bad guys, just what exactly is the state of antioxidant research? And what health claims can you believe? The experts - you were about to guess this - have a variety of opinions.

It's generally recognized that antioxidants have the ability to serve as sort of a rust protector for the body, putting a stop to a process called oxidation. Important molecules in the body, such as those that form the walls of arteries, become oxidized when they lose an electron. Once oxidized, they become unstable and easily break apart. The culprit, without a doubt, is the free radical, Veech says. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules, or single atoms with unpaired electrons, looking for a mate. So they steal an electron from the first thing they encounter, perhaps a cell wall or a strand of DNA.
As free-radical damage mounts, cells can no longer perform properly. Tissues degrade. Disease sets in. An excess of free radicals has been cited in the development of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and cancer. Aging itself has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free radical damage.
Yet not all free radicals are bad.
In fact, free radicals are necessary for life, according to Britton Chance, professor emeritus of biophysics, physical chemistry and radiologic physics at the University of Pennsylvania, a renowned expert on free-radical production. The body cannot turn air and food into chemical energy without a chain reaction of free radicals, for instance. Free radicals are also a crucial part of the immune system, floating through the veins and attacking foreign invaders. They help fight against bacteria. Free radicals are a natural byproduct of breathing; natural antioxidants mop some of them up. A balancing act emerges, says Veech. The body hopes to avoid excessive free-radical production, but it certainly doesn't want to get rid of all of them. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts and some meats supplies most people with the antioxidants needed to walk this tightrope, according to a report last year from the Institute of Medicine.
The IOM could find no convincing evidence that the bulk of the American population needs additional armaments in the form of antioxidant supplements to fight free-radical damage. The very notion that free radicals, produced naturally, are some type of unwelcome houseguest is silly, according to Veech.
Veech says that free radicals have been incorporated into the functioning human system over millions of years of evolution. The idea that they should be wiped out or minimized is nonsense, he says. "God," he says, "is no fool."
Low Levels, High Levels
Studies indicate fairly consistently that having too few antioxidants is a bad thing. One study, published in 1983 in the British medical journal The Lancet, found that people with low blood levels of selenium were twice as likely to develop cancer compared with people with normal levels.
Another study, published in 1986 in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), found that patients with a certain type of lung cancer were four times more likely to be deficient in beta carotene than a control group.
A 1989 study from the Netherlands associated low selenium levels with an increased risk of heart attacks. More convincingly, the Harvard-based Physicians Health Study - which has recorded the lifestyles of some 50,000 male health professionals for the past 15 years - found that men who ate a diet rich in vitamin E (from nuts, seeds and soybeans) were half as likely to develop heart disease as those with very low levels of dietary vitamin E. Although these epidemiological studies suggest an association between antioxidants and good health, this does not mean that the antioxidants caused the improved health. Nor does it imply that taking antioxidants in a pill form improves health. In the studies cited above, it is not clear what is responsible for the lower levels of the nutrients - a poor diet, a certain environment, some unknown metabolic factor.
Taking generous doses of antioxidant supplements showed some promise in studies published in the mid-1990s. Skin cancer patients given daily selenium supplements were twice as likely to survive their cancer as those patients not given selenium, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported in 1996. This was a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study with more than 1,300 patients - all the markings of good science. The findings were so dramatic, wrote the authors, that they stopped the study after six years so that all patients could benefit from the selenium supplement.
Other studies showed similar positive results: Vitamin E postponed the onset of debilitating Alzheimer's symptoms in a small study published in the NEJM in 1997; slowed the progress of coronary artery disease in a study at the University of Southern California School of Medicine that was published in JAMA in 1995; cut the risk of cataracts by half in a 1998 Stony Brook (N.Y.) Medical Center study published in the journal Ophthalmology; and lowered the risk of prostate cancer in a 1994 NEJM article. Vitamin C helped stave off blindness, kidney failure and the need for amputation among diabetics, according to a 1998 Duke University Medical Center report. Extra selenium, a mineral needed only in trace quantities, reduced the risk of prostate, colorectal and lung cancer, according to the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center (as reported in 1997 and 1998 in journals such as the American Journal of Epidemiology, Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Review). Consumers tuned in to these results. Sales of vitamin E grew from $590 million to $860 million from 1995 to 1999, according to Nutrition Business Journal. Sales of other antioxidants climbed by millions of dollars as well.
But the story doesn't end there. Side by side, over the years, came a wave of neutral and even negative reports about the benefits of antioxidant supplements. One study, reported in NEJM in 1994, found that Finnish male smokers were 18 percent more likely to develop lung cancer after taking a beta carotene supplement. In 1997, The Lancet published a study of nearly 2,000 men receiving vitamin E, beta carotene, both or a placebo after suffering their first heart attack. The two beta carotene groups were about twice as likely to die from a second heart attack or heart disease as the placebo group, and the vitamin E-only group was about 1.5 times as likely to die.
Other studies showed similar negative results: no evidence that vitamins C and E or beta carotene prevented colorectal cancer; no evidence that these "big three" prevented arteries from re-clogging after angioplasty; no evidence that beta carotene prevented cancer or heart disease in more than 22,000 physicians over 12 years; no evidence that extra selenium prevented cancer in 60,000 nurses; and more bad news for smokers taking beta carotene, this time with a 28 percent higher incidence of lung cancer. These studies were reported in NEJM from 1994 to 1997. Criticisms naturally flowed back and forth, with the pro-supplement camp finding methodological errors in studies casting doubt on pills, and the anti-supplement folks finding similar problems in the work that seemed to contradict their findings. Strangely, Veech says, all these studies might be absolutely right, pointing to the complex heart of the matter - that we don't understand the intricate relationship between certain types of antioxidants and certain types of free radicals at different moments over the course of one's lifetime."You can't talk about antioxidants en masse," says Veech. "They all have different potentials."

Barry Halliwell of the National University in Singapore wrote a short article in The Lancet last year entitled "The Antioxidant Paradox." Halliwell was lamenting the fact that although diets rich in antioxidants seem to have a positive effect on health, popping antioxidant supplements can be either beneficial or harmful, and the results are not at all predictable. If the chemistry is all the same (that is, pairing up free electrons and converting free radicals to neutral molecules), why would a given antioxidant have different effects at different times on different regions of the body? Several entirely different mechanisms might be taking place, researchers say: Extra amounts of antioxidants might be turning into pro-oxidants (which promote the removal of electrons from atoms), fueling free-radical production and its damage.
Supplements might do nothing at all because they can't get to where they are needed. Or antioxidants might not be the magic beneficial chemical in the food we eat after all.
Can antioxidants turn on you? Several studies have shown that people who did not get the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C had an increase in free-radical damage to their DNA. But, paradoxically, people who took megadoses of C also had an increase in DNA damage. The second scenario might happen, Halliwell says, because vitamin C can worsen cell damage once it has already started.
Within a cell, certain metal compounds are released as a result of free-radical damage. These metals themselves can act as a catalyst for further free-radical damage when they are in a "reduced" state, with a missing oxygen or extra hydrogen atom. Antioxidants place metals in this reduced state. Thus, in this environment, antioxidants become pro-oxidants, Halliwell says.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) advises cancer patients not to prescribe themselves antioxidants because of this potential effect, although it has never been demonstrated convincingly in human studies.
"Think of antioxidants as drugs," says Michael Thun, who heads epidemiological research for the ACS in Atlanta. There are gaps in our understanding, Thun says, and "antioxidants are not necessarily safe or beneficial." Compounding this is the fact that free radicals can kill cancer cells; that's how some cancer treatment works. And rapidly multiplying cancer cells can use antioxidants to their advantage to fuel their growth, Thun says. So taking antioxidants at the wrong time essentially arms the bad guy with the weapons to stay alive and multiply. We should point out that none of this has convinced some practitioners of alternative medicine not to prescribe antioxidants for cancer. Many do, and insist mainstream medicine is depriving patients of valuable cures and treatments. Another baffling complication is that - despite the assurances of pill makers who advise simply taking their pills by mouth and feeling confident that the body will know what to do with them - no one knows how to get antioxidants to travel where they are needed, when they are needed.
Most free-radical damage occurs in the mitochondria, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Chance. The process of making energy in the mitochondria, called the respiratory chain, depends on the availability of free radicals. And extra free radicals are made in the process. The mitochondria house a tiny, circular strain of DNA that contains 30 genes. This is separate from the double-helix DNA in the cell's nucleus. The mitochondrial DNA, called mDNA, is often the free radical's first point of attack. When mDNA is damaged, it cannot do its job of creating the proteins (molecular messengers) needed for daily bodily maintenance. This is where a magic bullet could come in handy, Chance says - something that could penetrate the mitochondria and mop up a rogue free radical set on doing damage, while steering clear of the intricate respiratory chain. Yet mitochondria are veritable fortresses with tough outer walls, moat-like inner barriers and meandering inner walls protecting their precious contents. Proteins get out, but antioxidants have a tough time getting in. "This is where the problem is," Harmon says, "getting into the mitochondria." No one is sure whether brute force - which is to say, a megadose of antioxidants - is the way into the mitochondria, says Bortz, who was a colleague of Linus Pauling, the Nobel laureate who recommended megadoses of vitamin C to ward off colds, flus and even cancer. Perhaps the body has more subtle ways of permitting entry.
Diet Vs. Supplements
And so it is that doctors are split on whether to recommend antioxidant supplements to their patients. The camps are broken down into those who believe there are not enough data to make blanket recommendations; those who feel that Americans (particularly children) have such a poor diet that they need a supplement to ensure adequate levels for basic function; and those who say that anyone can benefit from increased antioxidants regardless of how healthy the diet is. A smaller camp sees in the reports about negative effects of antioxidant pills reason enough not to take any.
For Bortz, who is in his sixties and runs a marathon once a year, whether or not to take an antioxidant supplement is "an intellectual issue." "Anything that will work, I'm for," Bortz says. "I just don't want people spending their money on false hopes... Exercise is the master therapy." Bortz says "maybe" to vitamin E; "nah" to vitamin C; and "no way" to beta carotene.
Halliwell argues that a varied diet seems to be more healthy than simple supplement-taking because the isolated antioxidant might not be the superhero. Fruit and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, but these plants contain hundreds of other chemicals. Any single chemical or combination of chemicals might pack the therapeutic punch.
Nutrients from food enable the body to make its own antioxidants.
Veech says that a chemical produced by the body called glutathione is ultimately responsible for neutralizing free radicals, and the glutathione concentration in cells dwarfs that of the free-radical scavengers such as vitamin C and E. So diet and energy demands determine the amount of free radical generation and removal, with supplements playing a minuscule role, if any. "The production of free radicals, absent genetic defects, results from normal metabolic processes," says Veech. "Likewise, the destruction of free radicals in a non-harmful manner is also the result of normal metabolic processes.
"People don't want to exercise. They don't want to eat healthy food. They don't want to stop drinking; they don't want to stop smoking; they don't want to stop having dangerous sex. They want to take a pill. Well, good luck."
